The Pharos, the great lighthouse of Alexandria, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It stood on the island of Pharos, in the harbor (港口) of the city of Alexandria. In 290 B.C, Ptolemy I Soter, the ruler of Egypt, ordered the building of the lighthouse. Twenty years later, it was finished — the first lighthouse in the world and the tallest building on Earth, besides the Great Pyramid of Egypt.
The Pharos was designed by Sostrates, a Greek architect (建筑师). Sostrates wanted to leave his name on the base of the lighthouse. But Ptolemy refused, ordering that only his own name appear on the building. But Sostrates found a way to do that. At the base of the Pharos, Sostrates left a message containing his own name. Then he covered it with plaster (建筑石膏) and left Ptolemy’s name over it. After many years, the plaster disappeared and people knew the true architect of the lighthouse.
In 1302 and 1323, two strong earthquakes hit Alexandria, damaging the lighthouse. In 1326, it finally fell into the sea. Much of what we know about the lighthouse comes from the writings of Arabs who once visited the Pharos.
The Pharos was about 384 feet tall, the same height as a modern 40-story building. At the top of the lighthouse stood a large statue of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Under it was a beacon, the source of light for the lighthouse. The Pharos used two kinds of beacons. At night, a large fire created the light. During the day, a huge mirror made use of the sunlight to create the light.
It was said that the mirror was also used to set enemy ships on fire as they entered the harbor by directing the sun’s rays (sunlight) at them. While the idea is interesting, it is also clearly impossible.
24. Why did Sostrates use plaster at the base of the Pharos?
A. To follow Ptolemy’s orders. B. To hide his name left on the base.
C. To protect the base from damage. D. To make the lighthouse more beautiful.
25. How long had the Pharos stayed standing?
A. For about 800 years. B. For about 1,000 years.
C. For about 1,600 years. D. For about 2,000 years.
26. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The lighthouse. B. The statue. C. A large fire. D. A huge mirror.
27. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain why the Pharos was built. B. To find more secrets about the Pharos.
C. To offer some basic facts about the Pharos. D. To introduce the true architect of the Pharos.

C
I’ll never forget the day when Mary came into my office and said, “ I am too old to learn how to use a computer.” I shook my head. Here was a woman who had raised 6 children and who had made great progress in her career telling me that she was too old to learn something new. I told her that I always believed people were never too old to learn.
Mary followed my advice and did learn how to use the computer. Now, she is retired and leading a very active life volunteering in her community, using her computer skills and helping anyone that needs help.
When she was in her sixties, one day she called me and said she had played the piano for others all her life, and she was going to make a CD of her own. My mind flashed back to the day when she told me she was too old to learn. You can imagine my surprise and delight.
To produce the CD, she had a lot of things to learn. It was not just sitting at the piano and playing. She had to research the songs, learn about copyright, and learn about marketing. It was pretty amazing for someone who once said she was too old to learn. And finally she made it. Now she has her own CD.
Most of you probably have heard about some people who have gone back to university in their seventies and have also graduated. They are on their way again to charging themselves with a new skill and a new attitude towards life. The point is that you are unable to learn anything at any age if you believe you are too old. On the contrary, you can achieve anything at any age if you believe you can.
28. When Mary said she was too old to learn, how did the author react to it?
A. He became disappointed with her. B. He felt sad and decided to help her.
C. He did not agree with her. D. He thought what she had said was true.
29. Why did Mary call the author one day in her sixties?
A. To ask him for some help. . B. To talk about her new CD.
C. To ask him to make a CD.  D. To tell him about her plan.
30. What was the author’s attitude towards Mary making a CD?
A. He thought it was impossible. B. He thought it was difficult.
C. He thought it was unnecessary. D. He thought it was interesting.
31. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. We’re never too old to learn. B. We should always learn new skills.
C. Interest is the best teacher. D. Some people succeed for a reason.

D
Does a grasshopper taco (墨西哥蚂蚱卷饼) sound delicious? If you were living in another part of the world — say, Mexico or Thailand or Kenya — the idea of eating insects might not seem strange to you at all. For thousands of years, insect-eating has been common practice among many of the world’s people. According to insect-eaters around the world, insects are tasty. “When I traveled in Mexico, I tried grasshoppers and found them really delicious,” Arnold van Huis, an insect scientist from Wageningen University in the Netherlands told TFK.
Insect fans say insects are not only tasty, they are also nutritious (有营养的). Arnold van Huis is working with other scientists to encourage insect-eating in areas where it is already common, as well as in Europe and North America, where people are more likely to kill an insect than eat it.
According to the United Nations, the planet’s population is now almost 7 billion. It is expected to reach 9 billion before 2050. By that time, people’s need for meat is expected to double. Raising livestock (家畜) requires large areas of farmland, and feeding the animals can be expensive. “We have to find something else to take the place of meat,” Arnold van Huis says. “One very good choice is using insects.”
Raising insects would require less land, says Arnold van Huis. Insects would also be cheaper to feed. “We throw away one-third of our food,” he says. “Insects could feed on that.”
For insect-eating to become popular in the U.S., Brian Fisher, an insect scientist at the California Academy of Sciences, says people must be careful with ready-to-eat insects. There are more than 1,700 types of insects that are safe to eat. But do not even think of eating insects from your backyard, since there is no way of knowing if they are dangerous! If you really want to eat insects, it is possible to order insect cuisine (烹饪) at a handful of U.S. restaurants.
Arnold van Huis is working with chefs in the Netherlands to develop delicious insect recipes. For one experiment, his team prepared two types of meatballs: some made with meat and others made with mealworms and meat. In a blind taste test, nine out of 10 people preferred the mealworm meatballs.
In the future, will eating insects be common practice for people in Europe and North America? “I’m completely sure it will,” says Arnold van Huis.
32. What can we learn about insect-eating in Thailand or Kenya?
A. It is not allowed. B. It is not common.
C. It is very popular. D. It is rather strange.
33. According to Arnold van Huis, what would be an advantage of eating more insects?
A. It would save more livestock.
B. It would solve environmental problems.
C. It would provide more nutrition for people.
D. It would help feed the world’s growing population.
34. Why does Brian Fisher advise people to go to restaurants to eat insects?
A. Insect cuisine ordered there is delicious.
B. Insects cooked there taste more like meat.
C. Insects cooked there are safe enough to eat.
D. Different insect cuisine can be chosen there.
35. How might Arnold van Huis feel about the experimental result mentioned in Paragraph 6?
A. Fearful. B. Satisfied. C. Doubtful. D. Surprised.
