During this year's Spring Festival, foreign visitors were noticeably more visible in the streets and neighborhoods across China.
Many chose to fly to China specifically during the holiday, immersing themselves in traditional New Year customs in urban districts, traditional villages, and temple fairs. They made dumplings, wrote Spring Festival couplets, visited temple markets, and watched dragon and lion dances. Some even joked that celebrating the festival in China made them feel "half Chinese."
Data shows that this trend of flying to China for Spring Festival is rising rapidly. Travel platform statistics indicate that international flight bookings to China around the holiday increased by more than 400 percent year on year. In several popular cities, over 30 percent of hotel bookings during the Spring Festival were made by foreign travelers.
Destinations are also becoming more diverse. In addition to traditional entry cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, the number of foreign visitors to cities including Chengdu, Xi'an, Harbin, and Guiyang has multiplied year on year. Some second- and third-tier cities, as well as lesser-known destinations, are now appearing on foreign travelers' itineraries.
For many overseas visitors, China's Spring Festival is increasingly becoming an important time for travel.
From a broader perspective, however, this trend is not simply a rebound in inbound tourism.
One factor is the continued impact of China's opening-up policies. In recent years, China's visa-free network has steadily expanded. By 2025, the number of countries eligible for unilateral visa-free entry had increased to 48, while mutual visa-exemption agreements covered 29 countries. China has also continued to optimize its 240-hour visa-free transit policy, expanding it to 55 eligible countries and 65 entry ports, making spontaneous trips to China more feasible.
The National Immigration Administration predicts that average daily cross-border passenger flows during the Spring Festival holiday will exceed 2.05 million, up 14.1 percent year on year. Greater policy convenience has lowered the threshold for travel to China and encouraged more foreign visitors to include the country in their travel plans.
A deeper reason lies in the appeal of Chinese culture itself. In recent years, "Becoming Chinese" has gradually emerged as a popular expression on overseas social media. Many foreign users express their interest in Chinese lifestyle wisdom by adopting elements of everyday life—drinking hot water, cooking Chinese food, practicing tai chi, or learning about health preservation based on the traditional Chinese solar terms.
Experiencing the Spring Festival in China has become an advanced stage of this cultural exploration. Increasing numbers of foreign visitors are no longer satisfied with quick sightseeing; they hope to understand Chinese culture through real-life experiences. Cultural participation—from making dumplings and preparing rice cakes to trying intangible cultural heritage crafts—is becoming a new highlight of inbound tourism.
The diversification of destinations also reveals a more multidimensional China. From ice and snow festivals in the north to traditional folk customs in the south, from cultural landmarks in major cities to intangible heritage experiences in rural areas, China's diverse cultural scenes continue to meet the varied interests of global travelers.
At the same time, many foreign visitors share their experiences online—watching dragon and lion dances, writing Spring Festival couplets, or visiting lantern festivals. They are not only participants in Chinese culture but also its communicators. The Spring Festival, inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is gaining an even broader global stage.
As more international travelers include the Spring Festival in their annual travel plans, what was once primarily a family celebration in China is gradually becoming a cultural festival shared by the world.
The Spring Festival is emerging as a bridge linking China and the world—allowing the world to see Chinese culture while helping more people come closer to China and understand it.
